Nurse Call rollout continues at Gillingham hospital

Courtney Thorne completes latest nurse call installation at Medway Maritime Hospital

The Medway Maritime Hospital

Courtney Thorne has installed its 08 System at Medway Maritime Hospital’s 20-room pre-occupation care unit (POCU), bringing the total number of wards utilising the system at the hospital to 10.

The installation is part of a rolling programme of nurse call upgrades at the facility, which is the largest in Kent, serving 400,000 patients a year.

The move to a wireless system at the hospital began four years ago when the Medway NHS Foundation Trust decided to phase out its existing hard-wired system in favour of a wireless system that could adapt more readily to its changing needs.

Courtney Thorne was appointed as the sole supplier of wireless nurse call systems at the hospital following a rigorous procurement process and is now specified as the required system for all refurbishment projects.

The POCU installation involved a total of 38 room units and follows several other recent Courtney Thorne wireless nurse call upgrade schemes, including the 24-bed Bronte Ward and the 28-bed Sapphire Ward. The upgrades will continue as and when routine works take place at the hospital, with Courtney Thorne taking responsibility for all custom design, installation and programming.

The installed system provides complete flexibility for the hospital, enabling reconfiguration by simply re-programming the system, with no wiring required. The simple-to-use touch-screen nurses’ station unit prioritises and logs calls, providing accurate and accountable management information for the hospital to aid reporting and resource planning.

A trust spokesman said: “The original decision to move to a wireless nurse call system was all about making the most of technology to phase in a reliable nurse call system that can adapt to our changing needs.

“Four years on, the feedback on the Courtney Thorne system from patients, nurses and management staff has been excellent and the company continues to respond to the specific needs of the hospital with installations for each project that meet our individual goals and adhere to our tight deadlines.”
