Innovation briefings provide overview of latest medical technologies

National Institute for Health and Care Excellence publishes new Medtech Innovation Briefings aimed at helping commissioners considering adopting the latest medical technologies

An innovative new defibrillator, bone marrow biopsy system, and an oral tracheal tube for intensive care patients are among the subjects of the latest Medtech Innovation Briefings released by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

The briefings, launched last year, are aimed at NHS and social care commissioners and staff considering using new medical devices and other medical technologies. They provide information including a description of the medical technology, how it’s used, and its potential role in treatment pathways.

The papers also include the likely costs of using the technologies and a review of relevant published evidence, but are not official NICE guidance and do not make any recommendations on the value of using the technologies. Instead, whether or not to use the products described is the choice of local staff.

The briefings will help avoid the need for organisations to produce similar information, so saving staff time, effort and resources.
