Grosvenor Interiors: Teenage Cancer Trust unit Nottingham

A 'youthful space' for teenagers doing their treatment, requested by The Teenage Cancer Trust

The challenge:

Creating a youthful, relaxing space where patients can meet with friends, family and other patients and as much as possible enjoy a ‘normal’ life during their treatment. The patient group at the unit wanted the environment to reflect the local area, building on the particular branding requested by The Teenage Cancer Trust.

Our approach:

Close to Sherwood Forest, the inspiration for our design was woodlands and forest animals. Also central to the project was social space for pool, music, and TV and for meeting friends and family. Social media aside, young people also want spaces for privacy, particularly when receiving treatment which can feel disempowering and frightening. In every patient’s room there is a colour change light canopy enabling patients to choose and control the colour of the room. There is also a drop-down visitor bed for friends and family if necessary. Nursing stations are ‘softened’ with Wall Glamour designs and there is built-in bespoke storage to help control the clutter generated with longer stays and ease cleaning. Within the ward there is also a quiet room, where patients can simply ‘chill’ or hold personal meetings with friends, family or nursing staff.
