Energy-saving Robur gas absorption heat pumps now available in the UK

GAHPs offer a significant reduction in carbon emissions

Robur gas absorption heat pumps are now available in the UK

The Robur range of high-efficiency gas absorption heat pumps (GAHPs) is now available in the UK supplied via UK distributor, Environmental Site Supplies (ESS).

The range consists of systems that provide heating, cooling and domestic hot water. Heating solutions provide high-efficiency heating using air source, ground source and water source technology. They are capable of supplying heating water at 65°C and domestic hot water at 70°C.

Robur is the largest worldwide supplier of GAHPs and has been developing its GAHP range since 1991. The systems use a tried-and-tested absorption refrigeration cycle, utilising a non-HFC liquid ammonia solution. The energy required for activation of the cycle is provided by a modulating gas burner.

Compared with the best condensing boilers, GAHPs typically offer a 40% saving in both running costs and carbon emissions

ESS has been promoting gas heat pumps since 2003 and is the leading UK distributor for this technology. Managing director, Kevin Pacey, said: “A recent report from Ofgem suggested a growing shortage of available power for at least the next 10-15 years. Even if power generation is increased, the transmission infrastructure will impede delivery for at least this period. We see an inevitable move towards gas in the interim, in which case its efficient use will become paramount. Gas heat pumps use existing transmission infrastructures to provide total heating and cooling solutions, and the Robur systems achieve this without using HFC refrigerants. Compared with the best condensing boilers, GAHPs typically offer a 40% saving in both running costs and carbon emissions.”

Using renewable and sustainable energy sources, Robur’s GAHPs offer a significant reduction in carbon emissions when compared with a condensing boiler and so may assist with Part L compliance and BREEAM credits.

A number of projects are already benefitting from cost and energy savings from the installation of Robur heat pumps. The technology can be retrofitted and integrated with existing systems such as gas boilers. This suits the healthcare market, for example, as well as the education, leisure and hospitality industries.
