Winners of the 2012 Building Better Healthcare Awards revealed

The Building Better Healthcare Awards 2012 was held at The Brewery in central London

Four hundred people packed The Brewery in central London yesterday to be among the first to find out the winners of the 2012 Building Better Healthcare Awards .

Representatives from the NHS and private healthcare sector joined industry suppliers to celebrate the people, processes, products and premises that are helping to transform medical practices across the UK and further afield.

A total of 14 winners trophies were handed out in five classes after being singled out by the seven-strong panel of judges. There were also a number of commendations, evidence of the high quality of entries this year, which reached record levels.

Dr Phil Hammond was a massive hit as celebrity presenter of the 2012 Building Better Healthcare Awards

The awards were announced by celebrity host, GP-turned-comedian Dr Phil Hammond, with the winners invited onto the stage to be pictured with the trophies. Finalists and those highly commended by the judges were also photographed with their certificates at the event.

Award for Best Inpatient Facility Design

WINNER: The Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care, Royal United Hospital, Bath (Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Trust, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, VINCI Construction UK)

The Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care at the Royal United Hospital, Bath won the Inpatient Facility Design award

Award for Best Out-of-Hospital Care Facility Design

WINNER: The Barrhead Health and Care Centre, Glasgow (NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and East Renfrew Council Community Healthcare Partnership, Avanti Architects, Graham Construction)

HIGHLY COMMENDED: Broxden Dental Centre (NHS Tayside, Archial, Mansell)

The Barrhead Health and Care Centre in Glasgow won the award for Best Out of Hospital Design

Award for Best International Healthcare Design

WINNER: Emergency and infectious diseases unit, Skane University Hospital Malmo, Sweden (Regionservice Södra Skåne, C F Moller Architects, SAMARK Arkitektur & Design, PEAB AB)

The new emergency and infectious diseases unit at Skane University Hospital in Malmo, Sweden, won the International Healthcare Design title

Award for Future Healthcare Design Concept (Open)

HIGHLY COMMENDED: The BedPod (Nightingale Associates, Billings Jackson Design and SAS International)

BedPod won a commendation in the Future Healthcare Design Concept category

PATIENT ENVIRONMENT CLASS

Award for Best External or Landscaping Project

WINNER: Chemotherapy Garden, St Mary’s Hospital, Isle of Wight (Isle of Wight NHS Trust, St Mary’s Hospital, Healing Arts, Craig Ratcliff, Martin Evans, Paul Sivell)

HIGHLY COMMENDED: Cross Lane Hospital landscaping project, Scarborough (Tees Esk and Wear Valley NHS Foundation Trust, Richard Eves Associates, Smeedon Foreman, J Palmer Landscapes)

JUDGE’S SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD: Sensory garden at Velindre Cancer Centre, Cardiff (Velindre NHS Trust, Georgina May, Carol Lowe, Jill Cooze, Grace and Webb)

The new chemotherapy Garden at St Marys Hospital on the Isle of Wight won the Best External or Landscaping Project title

Award for Best Use of the Arts

WINNER: Ferndene Children and Young People’s Centre, Northumberland (Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, Medical Architecture, Laing O’Rourke)

Ferndene Children and Young Peoples Centre in Northumberland picked up the award for Best Use of the Arts

Award for Best Interior Design

WINNER: Wards 23 and 29, Bradford Royal Infirmary (Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Andy Edwards Design, Big Studio Glass Design, New Vision Signs & Graphics, PEC Building & Shopfitting)

The Best Interior Design Award went to Bradford Royal Infirmary for its work refurbishing two wards with a view to improving facilities for people with dementia

PEOPLE CLASS

Award for Best Project Team

WINNER: Project team, Discovery House, Lincoln (Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Gillingdod, Costain)

HIGHLY COMMENDED: Project team, Wilberforce Health Centre, Hull (NHS Hull, Hull CityCare, HLM Architects, Sewell Group)

The award for Best Project Team went to the people behind the Discovery House development

SUSTAINABILITY CLASS

Award for Innovation in Sustainability

WINNER: Houghton Primary Care Centre, Sunderland (Sunderland Teaching Primary Care Trust, P + HS Architects, Willmott Dixon, Cundalls, Mott MacDonald)

Houghton-Le-Spring Primary Care Centre provides a benchmark for carbon reduction in the NHS and picked up the award for Innovation in Sustainability

TECHNOLOGY CLASS

Award for Best Technology for Improving Productivity

WINNER: KwickScreen portable screen (Teal Furniture – Luke Keyes, Mike Brewster, Michael Korn, Denis Anscomb)

HIGHLY COMMENDED: Remind, Rebook and Refill appointment management solution (Netcall)
